I have made these items to Fit Jean Greenhowe pattern Rainbow babies. I have altered the head, which I have detailed at the very bottom, and knitted them in a single skin tone wool.

Materials/equipment

DK in all colours

Card for inside surfboard.

3mm needles through out


Abbreviations used in this pattern

inc increase (Knit into front and back(KFB), or your preferred method)

  1. cast on 72st

  2. k35, inc, pm, inc, k35 74st

  3. p36, inc, m, inc, p36 76st

  4. inc, k36, inc, m, inc, k36,inc 80st

  5. p39, inc, m, inc, p39 82st

  6. Inc, k39,inc, m, inc, k39,inc 86st 

if you wish to add a stripe change wool here

  1. p42, inc, m, inc, p42 88st

  3. p 1 row

  4. p43, p2t, m, p2t, p43 88st

change wool back to the original colour to end the stripe.

Cast off leaving long end to seam.

Fold in half and sew the row ends together,continue round and sew cast on seam together, pause here to place a piece of card inside the surfboard to give it some stability. Once happy with the cardboard, sew up the cast off edge.

 

Shorts 

first leg

  1. Cast on 22st 

  2. Ss 6 rows starting with a k row

Cut thread, place on a stitch holder

Second leg 

  1. Cast on 22st 

  2. Ss 6 rows starting with a k row

Join legs together

  1. Place a marker on first st. Knit across 22st of the second leg, then continue in K across the 22st of the first leg, place a marker on the last st. 44st

  2. Ss 7 rows starting with P row.

  3. K1, p1, to end repeat this row 3 More times 

  4. Cast off in k.


Your shorts should look like this, at this stage.



Fold side seams  to centre and sew up centre leg seams to marker.


And finally sewing down the centre seam to markers.

I weaved the end through rib stitches to give the illusion of a draw string.


Basic Ring/Float

  1. cast on 36st

  2. P 1 row

  3. (K5, inc) x6 42st

  4. Ss 3 rows start with p

  5. (k6, inc) x6 48st

  6.  Ss 3 rows start with p

  7. (k7, inc) x6 54st

  8. Ss 5 rows start with p

Sew row ends together, Making sure to stuff as you go,  sew cast off edge and cast on edge together pausing to stuff every few stitches.

Turtle Float

  8. (K2, k2t) x6 18st

  9. Ss 2 row

  10. (p2t, p1) x6 12st

  11. K 1 row

cast off, sewing seam ends together, stuff and attach cast off edge to ring


EYES in Black DK Placed on either side of head between inc and dec stitches,

Turtle feet/flippers

 Make 4

  1. Cast on 4

  2. Inc in all 8st

  3. P 1 row

  4. (k1 inc) x4 12

  5. P 1 row

  6. (k2 inc) x4 16

  7. P1 row

  8. Cast off 

Sew row ends together, then attach this seam to the turtle.



Turtle Tail

  1. Cast on 6st

  2. Ss 4 rows

  3. Cut yarn leaving end long enough to thread through stitches and sew up side of row ends and attach to turtle between back legs. See picture above.


I gathered purl stitches on ‘shell’ of the turtle to create a little shape. This is optional.


Place eyes either side of head.



Duck Float/ring

Make a basic float on page two.


Duck Head

Starting at base of neck

  1. Cast on 12

  2. P 1 row

  3. (K2t, k1) x4 8st

  4. P 1 row

  5. (inc) x3, k2, (inc) x3 14st

  6. P 1 row

  7. (inc) x5,k4, (inc) x5 24st

  8. Ss 4 rows, start with p

  9. (P2, P2t) x6 18st

  10. K1 row

  11. (p1, p2t) x6 12st

  12. K2t x6 6st

Bind off by threading wool through remaining stitches and sew row ends together. Stuff and attach to the front of the basic float.


Duck Tail

  1. Cast on 12st

  2. K1 row

  3. P1 row

  4. K2t, k8 k2t, 10st

  5. P1 row

  6. K2t, k6, k2t 8st

  7. P2t x 4

Bind off by threading wool through remaining stitches and sew row ends together. 



Then sew this seam to float, making sure the cast on edge is nearest the outside of the float.

And the narrow pointy end is pointing to the centre of the float.




Beak

  1. Cast on 8 st

  2. Ss3 rows start with 3

  3. Cast of all st,

Sew seam ends together and cast on stitches,  attach to front of duck head


Place eyes in line with either side of the beak.


Swim Suit

starting at bottom edge

  1. Cast on 42 place marker between 21 and 22 st.

  2. K 2 row

  3. Ss 10 rows starting with p.  Place marker on both ends of the 10th row.

  4. K2t, k to last 2 st, k2t

  5. P2t, p to last 2 st, p2t

Repeat last 2 rows until you have 30st left

  1. K2t, k to last 2 st k2t,

  2. P1 row

Repeat last 2 rows until you have 20st left

  1. P2t, k16, p2t 18st

  2. K2t x9

  3. Cast off,


Sew row ends together FROM markers on 10th ss row to cast on edge, Join this seam to marker on cast on edge at stitches 21/22 weave in end.

Rainbow Baby ALTERATION to head

On paragraph 2 of shape body where it says join on skin colour. I continued as follows

  • P 1 row 24st

  • (K3 (k2t)x3, k3) x2 18st

  • Inc in all st 36st

  • Ss 12 rows
